03. Newston from Unember

Newston is a revival typeface based on Morris Fuller Benton’s Gothic, grotesque sans-serif back in the golden 1910’s. Initially prepared for American Type Founders to modernize United States typography (and it did!), the typeface is now in the hands of public domain due to the defunct of ATF decade ago & lacking of active descendants. I own one of the 60,000 copies – the ATF specimen book published in 1923. And I was fascinated – or mesmerized by it I’d say. So I figured I’d revive a typeface into digital font by referencing the book (at that point I’ve found out the copyright of the book has expired.).

Here’s the result. After many (many) days and dozens of hours at work, Newston was born – a full cap title display font made with real attention to details. I gave my utmost attention to every single glyph in it. As much as it made me fall for its simplicity and beauty by the end of first phase. And by giving my attention I don’t mean just work on the individual characters – the real magic/ struggle happens when characters are made into words and sentences. That’s right.

If you’re looking for a title typeface that expresses simple integrity with a vintage flavor, Newston is made especially for you. Try it – you’ll like it.

Few things you should know about the gears in the aspect of utility:

  • As promised earlier, I have updated Newston with modern symbols such as @, %, * and etc. See preview #4 for visual proof.
  • You’ll also find a pack of 12 vintage illustrations in AI vector & high resolution PNG. I packed them in as bonus to the font. These illustrations were scanned and optimized from my personal collection of vintage catalogs back in the early 1900’s.

04. Newston Inked from Unember

Introducing Newston Inked – an inkable vintage typeface handmade out of authentic ink and passion. Newston Inked was made to give a sense of century old printing and worn ink impression. It was handmade with real ink and muddy fingers by me.

If you’re looking for a title typeface that expresses simple integrity with a vintage flavor – genuinely textured with fresh handsome ink, Newston Inked is made especially for you.

Things you should know about Newston Inked in the aspect of utility:

  • A full cap typeface, it comes with 4 styles (One, Two, Three, & Four). Uppercase and lowercase are alternates for the same alphabets. See preview #3. In total each alphabets has 8 initial inky options.
  • Initial? That’s right. In case of ink shortage (too much grunge?), ink them up by just copy paste and choose another style stacking it. Check preview #2 & #4 to see its visual proof. Newston Inked will do fantastic in both standalone and stacked.
  • Each of the alternates was made with brand new piece of exclusive real ink texture by me. No recycling. No duplicating. You’ll not find the same texture pattern inside or outside the typeface.
  • You’ll also find a pack of 5 vintage illustrations in AI vector & high resolution PNG. I packed them in as bonus to the font. These illustrations were scanned and optimized from my personal collection of vintage catalogs back in the early 1910’s.

05. Shrimpse from Unember

Shrimpse is a tasty display serif made to express ideas with its savory forms and ink texture. Made based on the classic Cheltenham real print from 1920s, once known to be the king of display faces – Shrimpse does extremely well in displaying and advertising as the title face. With Shrimpse you can access to different inked letters easily. The texture is highly detailed – check out the high resolution preview to see how good looking and easy it is to use the font.

  • Shrimpse is a full lowercase typeface, consists of 3 styles – light, medium, and heavy
  • Uppercase and lowercase were both lowercase letter but inked differently. In total, each english alphabets has 6 textured options.
  • You will not find the same texture pattern reoccurring in the font. All texture were made freshly.

06. Steelplate Script from Unember

Steelplate Script is a revival typeface based on an elegant vintage script of the same name, Steelplate Scriptby American Type Founders in 1923. Ever since I acquired my ATF Speciment Book (published in 1923 and only 60,000 copies were printed), I’ve been eyeing on this script. It was classy, slightly formal, yet organic and in my eyes, a rarity. Later I searched through cyberspace for months trying to find a digital font of this beauty – turned out no one has really paid enough attention to it to make that happen. I figured if I want to use the script, I’ll have to make it myself. And this font is the result of that thought.

Nuts and bolts:

  • Absolutely lovely typeface, Steelplate Script works very well for vintage theme project. Imagine this in an invitation card.
  • Authentically includes all numbers and english alphabets, dollar sign, and couple more symbols. All were taken from the original design with minimal alteration.
  • Imperfect glyph drawings that’s made from old print. Less stiff and more alive.

07. Enigton (Monograms from 1923) from Unember

Enigton is a revival monogram typeface based on virkotype combination monograms issued by the American Type Founders in 1920’s. Once dominated the printing industry, the typeface is now in the hands of public domain due to the defunct of ATF decade ago & lacking of active descendants. I own one of the 60,000 copies – the ATF specimen book published in 1923. As I was fascinated by it, Enigton is the 3rd typeface I’ve revived. Enigton is an elegant monogram typeface that reflects vintage modernity and the spirit of honest business printing in 1923. Use Enigton in your projects – it’ll subtly imprint and succeed the good old authenticity of the golden time in american printing industry.

In the aspect of utility:

  • Once you downloaded & installed Enigton, you’ll be able to create monogram with initials of your choice in seconds easily. Just open any software, type the initials and put them into Enigton’s styles (Left, Middle, or Right).
  • If the oval shape block is needed, simply type one of the letter C, D, E, or F (2-Letter-Combination to 5-Letter-Combination block) in Enigton-Extra before your initials. No extra alignment is needed after that, I’ve setup everything nicely for you so you don’t have to spend your work time adjusting spacing/ kerning.
  • You’ll also find a pack of 10 vintage illustrations (see preview #5) in AI vector & high resolution PNG. I packed them in as bonus to the font. These illustrations were scanned and optimized from my personal collection of vintage catalogs back in early 1910’s.
